What the Experts Say

It’s amazing how much difference a 12 inch piece of tubing can make! All will be revealed a little later in the review.

Having purchased John Packer trumpets for the Music Service over the last few years, ranging from the initial JP Blues 151 through to the JP151 mk II, I was very interested to try their new JP251SW trumpet. Initial impressions were that it was well put together, having all the usual refinements such as a first valve saddle and fixed third valve slide ring with a stopper rod. It feels comfortable to hold, is not too heavy and has a nice solid valve action. In fact, it has the look of another very well known make of trumpet.

When blowing the trumpet for the first time I was surprised how well it blew, particularly the high register. The higher D octave felt very easy and I didn’t really have to make any adjustments. Intonation overall was very good, which brings me nicely back to my opening statement. This trumpet’s leadpipe has been designed by Richard Smith of Smith-Watkins fame and boy does it make a difference! Having previously witnessed the effect a Smith-Watkins leadpipe had on the JP171SW cornet, it seems to have had the same effect on the trumpet.

I thought it would be interesting to blind test this trumpet against the Yamaha YTR 2335 trumpet, so played them both to a colleague – they preferred the JP251SW, feeling it had a more focused sound, although sounding a little brighter than the Yamaha. My impression of playing both trumpets was that the JP251SW just felt easier to play. The notes slotted very well which must be good for up and coming trumpet players as this can only build confidence in their playing.

I think this is without doubt the best trumpet John Packer have produced to date and as far as student trumpets go, it is one of the best I’ve played. With a price of a little under £300 it seems to me to be good value for money and would be a suitable instrument to take pupils through from beginning, to a point at which they need to move onto a “pro” instrument.

John packer have introduced their new trumpet the JP251SW. It is very well built with a lot of attention to detail, including a solid locking third valve key ring and great water key operation. The instrument is very free blowing due to the addition of the Smith-Watkins lead pipe and all the higher register is much easier to control. The intonation over the range is clear and the usual notes that are flat are easily adjustable and pose no problems as my students have found out! This is not a student trumpet. It is as good as many trumpets 5 times the price. This is a newcomer to the market and ideal for both the student who needs a good instrument to develop and the parents who will appreciate the great price. A real bargain for a quality instrument.

With the old Smith-Watkins safely ensconced in a heavy duty flight case which had served me well on a gruelling series of flights encompassing South-East Asia and the Antipodes, my first surprise of the day was to find that the aforementioned instrument was unusable – having endured apparently, a sustained attack on a flight from Edinburgh to Exeter.

Although I needed it that evening I wasn’t overly worried because several years ago my parents had relocated to Bradford-on-Tone – a short drive from John Packers Brass and Woodwind shop. This is where Ian (a repairer at John Packer's) and I beheld the trumpet, with third valve jammed half way down and the third valve slide entering the socket at a jaunty angle. That was just for starters. He took it away for an assessment and Steve showed me to his stock with a view to hiring an instrument if need be.

Have you got any Richard Smith trumpets?”

-Yes -Have you got a 68 leadpipe? -Yes -I’ll try that.

This time I came back out of the room much happier.

-Yeah that’ll do.

Steve wasn’t finished however.

-Try this one would you? -What is it? -Just give it a go first…

It certainly looked pretty: a nice silver lacquer finish and rather attractive nacre valve tops. Gave it a go. It was very good. A lovely open, free-blowing horn. Responsive. Especially so ascending into the higher register. The “slots” were where you’d expect them to be. It was beautifully set up.

“That’s a very nice trumpet.” I said. “I really like it. What is it?” “A John Packer” Steve responded. “From China. With a Richard Smith leadpipe” “Good grief. Chinese!”

I've tried numerous trumpets from the Far East over the years, all purporting to be the next revelation. Every one would “back up” when
you started to throw air down it. Not this one...

“How much are you selling these for?” “£321” said Steve.

My second surprise of the day. My jaw hit the floor. You could pay £2000 more for a trumpet that sounds and feels no better than this one does.

“Thank you Steve” I said, “but I don’t want to hire this trumpet. I want to endorse it”.
