Information about Gannin' To Blaydon Races (Clarinet Trio)
The Blaydon Races Song of 1862 is regarded as the unofficial anthem of Tyneside and is sung at the start of an annual 5.9 mile athletics race which takes place every 9th June (since 1981). The words of the song are used as the basis for the whole race beginning in Collingwood Street in Newcastle, heading west along Scotswood Road and finishing in Blaydon in Gatehead.
This arrangement for 3 clarinets allows all 3 instruments to enjoy the melody. The 3rd clarinet part is entirely in the chalumeau register, encouraging players at this playing level to be included in ensemble playing. A jazzy middle section with a walking 3rd clarinet part is followed by a return to the six-eight jog of the original tune.
Playing Level: Easy/medium, Grade 1-2 upwards
Suitability: Clarinet Trio and clarinet ensemble
